How to Choose the Right Golf Ball

Choosing the right ball is critical to cutting your golf handicap. A ball impacts your game almost as much as your clubs, so it's important to choose a ball that's right for you. Below is a six-step process for selecting the right golf ball, a process I often review in my golf lessons and golf tips. It's a relatively new selection approach. But first, let's review the standard historical approach to choosing a golf ball.

Standard Selection Approach

Technology News

With this approach you chose a golf ball going from the tee forward. In other words, you hit balls from the tee and observed their performance characteristics. You based your decisions primarily on control and distance, depending on their preference.

How to Choose the Right Golf Ball

This approach was appropriate when ball-manufacturing technology was simpler. Here were your options.

1. If you wanted the ultimate in control, you chose a three-piece with a balata cover. It offered high-spin rates, soft feel, and good maneuverability, but it lacked durability. I used to recommend this ball in my golf lessons and golf tips for players with low golf handicaps adept at shot making.

2. If you wanted the ultimate in distance, you chose a two-piece ball with a Surlyn cover. This ball would travel far and last a long time. Unfortunately, its lack of spin greatly reduced control, especially around the greens. I used to recommend this ball for players with high golf handicaps who needed distance more than control.

3. If you wanted something in between, you choose a three-piece ball with a Surlyn cover. With this ball, you sacrificed a little control for more distance and durability. This ball worked relatively well.

This process worked well for a long time. But it's less appropriate for evaluating today's golf balls, which incorporate the latest advancements in technology.

Breakthroughs in Technology

Ball manufacturing technology saw several breakthroughs in the 1990s and beyond, complicating selection. Multilayer balls, like the Top-Flite Strata, which provide less spin for more distance and a softer cover for better control around the greens, hit the market in 1996, followed by Titleist's Pro V1--a solid-core, distance ball--in 2000. Nike's One and Titleist's Next also debuted in the last 10 years.

While these balls all represented technological breakthroughs, they challenged the standard approach ball selection. Basically, you still chose a ball from the tee going forward based on distance and control.

A New Selection Approach

Today, there's another approach to choosing a ball. This approach is based on going from the green backwards. It's proving more appropriate for today's game. Below is a six-step methodology for choosing a ball based on this new approach.

Step 1: Define Your Needs.

First, you need to (1) assess your game, (2) define your needs, and (3) decide what you want and don't want from a ball. Defining your needs is crucial to choosing the right ball. Remember not everyone with the same ball-striking ability, golf handicap, and/or swing speed will play the same ball. Ask yourself such questions as "Do I need more distance?", "Do I need more control with my irons?"

Step 2: Chose Test Balls

Select several balls you want to test. Base your decision on your defined needs. Try selecting balls from each category--multilayered, two-piece, and super soft, low compression--to see how they test. Remember not every manufacturer's models of the same type ball will react exactly alike.

Step 3: Test from the Fringe

Take the test balls to the fringe of the green. Hit some chip shots and pitch shots, and observe the results. See which balls hit the green and "check" and which hit the green and release. Then, hit some putts and sand-shots. Observe performances. In general, the multilayer balls will feel softer, fly a bit low, and stop or check more on the green than their two-piece counterparts. Super-soft balls will roll the farthest with the least amount of spin after hitting the ground.

Step 4: Test from 100 Yards

Take the balls and move out into the fairway to the 100-yard marker. Test each ball from that point and observe each ball's checking and releasing characteristics after it hits the green.

Step 5: Test Balls from 150 yards

Now, take your balls out to the 150-yard marker and hit from there. Observe the results. Use the same criteria to evaluate each ball.

Step 6: Test Balls from the Tee

Go to the tee box and hit the balls with your driver. Look for drives that reach their apex or highest point quickly and then level out and carry far down range. What you don't want to see are drives that start low and then shoot up like a jet plane taking off. Such shots indicate that the driver has added too much spin to the ball, resulting in shorter drives that hook or slice more.

Now, obviously you can't necessarily go out onto the course to do all this testing. Your local range or practice area will work just fine. Once you've completed these steps, you're ready to choose. Base your decision on the most meaningful combination of performance qualities--meaningful to you, that is. For example, golfers who base their iron play on shots that hit and bite close to where they land will probably prefer a multilayer ball, even if it means sacrificing a little trajectory and distance.

Remember a golf ball impacts your game almost as much as your clubs. If the ball you choose doesn't feel right after selecting it, try another. Give each ball a fair trail.

Choosing a ball that's right for you, as I say in my golf lessons and golf tips, takes some work, but it's well worth the effort. Having the right ball is crucial to improving your game and lowering your golf handicap. It also helps build self-confidence. Choose wisely.

What's Really Scary This Halloween

These are the nights when schools around America are filled with Harry Potters, soldiers, Draculas, and Disney princesses--at least those schools that still observe Halloween. There may be parades, parties, and picture-taking--and enough candy to keep dentists' chairs occupied for the next year.

But this Halloween I find myself contemplating something scarier than any Halloween fright mask--even a Nancy Pelosi "Speaker of the House" mask. It's the thought of how money is spent in the name of educating the next generation.

Technology News

A survey cited by National Public Radio in 2004 showed that 47 percent of schools teach something dubbed "abstinence-plus." The theory behind this sexual school of thought is that, while abstinence is best, some students will simply refuse to abstain, so schools should teach kids about condoms and contraception as well. But, at a time when technology is advancing faster than our hands can fly across a computer keyboard, should we really be spending part of the school day teaching kids how to put on condoms? If parents are responsible for ensuring that their children are potty-trained by kindergarten, shouldn't it be up to parents to make sure their offspring learn about the birds and the bees?

What's Really Scary This Halloween

Or consider this: A national poll reported by CBS News two years ago indicated that Americans don't believe in human evolution. Fifty-five percent said God created humans in their present form, i.e., no apes were involved in the creation of man and woman. And yet, school districts throughout the U.S. continue to waste their precious resources teaching children that man evolved from monkeys. It seems to me that, if a child believes that he or she has an ancestor who's an ape, he or she is more likely to behave like one.

And then there's the biggest money-waster--the failure to teach children the difference between right and wrong. The fancy name for the problem is moral relativism. It's a concept that's preached in the mainstream media everyday: "No one should force his or her moral values on anyone else...That's your truth, but not my truth...Don't post your Ten Commandments here." There is a religion taught in public schools--it's just not the Judeo-Christian kind. It's a religion dedicated to the principles of the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Education Association. God is irrelevant; the state is divine; and everyone should take an oath of "tolerance"--meaning an acceptance of whatever kind of deviant lifestyle is being promoted at the moment on television.

Why not spend some of our tax dollars teaching schoolchildren that life really means something--that every child in the womb deserves a chance at life? Let's face it--if you teach a student that killing an unborn child is acceptable, what's to prevent that child from growing into a teenager who thinks it's O.K. to pick up a gun and shoot someone? It doesn't matter whether the weapon is a semi-automatic or a scalpel--a killing is a killing.

In the kind of school budget that I'm proposing, we've cut out money for condom education, evolution propaganda, liberal indoctrination, and abortion promotion. That leaves quite a bit of money left. And we should be using that money to make schools safer and teenagers more disciplined.

Let's take some of the leftover cash and spend it on metal detectors. After all, a middle school student's life is just as precious as a business traveler's. If we care enough about airborne terrorism to place metal detectors in airports, we should care enough about school-based terrorism to install detectors in schools. It's a shame that we would have to take this step but, with school shootings becoming a routine part of the headlines, it's now necessary.

And finally, let's devote some money for boot camps for teens. It's the only way to get some teenagers in shape--and out of prison.

The Most Popular Laptop Brands in 2011-2012

There are a wide variety of laptops out there, as there is a wide variety of brands, or manufacturers, that make laptops. Some of them have gained fame, while others still linger in the dark awaiting recognition. What makes a laptop brand popular and what are the most popular laptop brands?

Popularity, when it comes to technology and specifically laptops, has much to do with a lot features the computing machine has to offer the end user. Some brands have established themselves as innovators and usually bring out laptops with the newest technology built into them, allowing for a small glimpse into the future of mobile computing. Others are known by their interesting designs and the general feel a laptop can bring to a user. Many have gone to great lengths to optimize the way people work and play using laptops, and several branches (a.k.a. brands) have emerged, each of them dealing with a specific segment when it comes to usability or ultra performance.

Refurbished

Brands like Alienware, for example, are known worldwide to provide top-notch gaming system. These come usually packed with the latest high-tech solutions, meaning a heap of processing power to be able to withstand high requirements the newer generation of games have. Also, they are known to have quite a large price tag to them, so you won't find your laptop for everyday use when searching through the Alienware brand. Instead, you'll come across powerhouses which pack in a lot of tech in a very small space capable of taking any task you might throw at it.

The Most Popular Laptop Brands in 2011-2012

Apple, on the other hand, is a great brand known worldwide for their unique approach to mobile computing. This brand is a true innovator in almost all aspects of the way we interact with technology. Aside from their already renown iPad and iPod line of products, their laptops are some of the best you'll find which have a reasonable price tag to them and a lot of processing power to go. Their support makes Apple one of the most popular laptop brands today and their unique operating system approach give new meaning to the term "user friendly".

Again, on the innovative side of things, one brand to truly appreciate is the Lenovo. Their laptops are known to be durable high performance machines, and the unique designs they pull out on a constant basis make them a true competitor in this popularity contest. Their laptops are usually packed full with useful and convenient software designed for businesses and average consumers alike. They address a lot of consumer needs and new generation software will keep them in a high position for years to come.

Sony is another popular brand among users. Their laptop designs are considered to be sometimes luxurious and their customer support can only be matched by Apple's. Their goal is not only to make laptop that work well, but also make laptops that look exceptional and have an ultra-modern look and feel about them. They invented the island style keyboards and have been known to provide a better typing and navigation experience.

Acer is a bit of each, but since it doesn't focus too much on a specific segment, they come out with plain looking laptop that gets the job done. This is addressed to people who don't care much for the laptop design, and are interested specifically in everyday tasks. As an everyday use laptop, the Acer brand could be one of the most affordable laptops the market has to offer.

The Most Popular Laptop Brands in 2011-2012

Before you will decide which laptop will replace your old system or which notebook will be your new toy to play and work with, consider the price, portability and performance as deciding factors for buying the best laptop for your needs, either you'll going to use it at home as a all-purpose laptop, for hard gaming or graphic design.

It's always a top decision to choose one that is made by one of the top rated laptop brands 2011-2012

Building Refurbishment

Building refurbishment is the act of re-styling or modifying an existing building. Buildings will not necessarily need a full refurbishment very often at all, but there is often some work that would be beneficial to carry out, whether to the interior of exterior. Sometimes a complete refurbishment will be carried out, and this is generally in circumstances where the building is going to change its purpose (from offices to houses, for instance), but can also be because it is in desperate need of updating because of antiquated wiring systems and suchlike. Having a surveyor assess your building is a good way to find out if modernisation could be in order.

One reason you should consider refurbishing a building is to improve energy efficiency. Often building owners will overlook the amount of money that may be lost just because the energy you are using to heat up a building, for example, is being wasted due to poor insulation. If you are having a building refurbished anyway, then consider improving the wall and ceiling insulation in the process. For walls, use a 6 inch batt of insulation for an R-20 rating (the measure of resistance to heat flowing out) and ceilings can be made an R-40 rating by using 12 inch batts. Make sure all doors and windows are at least double glazed, and have a thermal break which will stop heat passing out. Replacement of water systems such as toilets and boilers can also prevent excessive water loss. These are all factors that are often overlooked when refurbishing a building, but that could save you a lot of money in the long run, and make the building more habitable.

Refurbished

It is vital, when refurbishing a building, that you hire a professional team to do so. Do not be afraid to ask a firm to see a portfolio of other work that they have done. This is especially important if the building you want to improve has period features, or other specialist needs: make sure that the people working on it have done that type of work before and know exactly what is necessary to clean and retain the spectacular impact of the building.

Building Refurbishment

It can be advisable to ask for sketches to be drawn up in advance of any work beginning: it is easy to make mistakes because of a break down in communication, so make sure you put across exactly what you want doing, so you do not end up paying out for unnecessary work or a refurbishment that is not up to your expectations.

Refurbishment is also something that can be good to do in stages. If you have a generally fine building, then just refurbish certain parts as it seems necessary: fix a leaky roof now to prevent more expensive problems later. Basically, make improvements as they are needed and consider all possible areas to make sure you don't miss anything that could benefit you by improving. Always hire the best you can afford and be sure you are clear about what needs doing.

Building Refurbishment

Building refurbishment is a big job, but does not have to be too stressful a one.

Used Lockers

Used lockers are metal storage containers that can be used to store gym clothes, sporting equipment, office wear, all kinds of personal items, or, in the case of heavy-duty, high-security lockers, personal valuables and/or company documents (but in the latter case, a safe might be a better bet). Used lockers are reasonably priced and are not just for schools and students. They are great to use around the home or summer camp. Used lockers come in all shapes and sized and are made using different materials including the traditional metal lockers. You will find many used metal lockers for sale online at locker company sites and other sites like http://www.ebay.com.

Lockers are found in schools, work, gyms, etc. Often times schools and gyms replace lockers every few years. Many locker companies will refurbish these lockers and put them up for sale. The prices are far cheaper than buying new lockers, and you can hardly tell the difference. Used lockers are great for the home because you can store almost anything in them from household cleaning products (keeping them away from the kids) to storing valuables including papers or collectibles.

Refurbished

Depending on the design, you can keep your locker in the basement or in your bedroom. As noted, used lockers can be purchased in all shapes, sizes, colors and designs, and because they are refurbished, they look brand new. You can even find used wooden lockers that will look great in a bedroom, and will conveniently store materials that need to stay dry like important personal records.

Effect of Technology on Our Lives

Technology is an improved route to an unimproved target. Technology is associated with innovation. It involves the transformation of ideas into something useful. Innovation is just not limited to creative people and organizations, but also involves the availability of technological and scientific talent. Technology and innovation are synergistic. Technology has definitely changed our lives and for the better.

Looking back in time, we realize how much our lives have changed due to the fruits of technology. It has provided us with freedom and less consumption of time and resources. Pointing out a particular technology for the drastic changes in one's life is simply not possible. A nation's economic growth can be measured according to the level of technology. This is because a number of factors are responsible for affecting an individual's life style. The most important factor for deciding the working of a particular technology is the presence of competition. One kind of technology seems beneficial only until a technological advancement does not occur.

Technology News

The most effective piece of technology is the mobile phone, and now a days being equivalent to a civilization. Due to technological changes, the dependency upon technology has increased many folds. Some advancement occurs at such a pace that they become self-defeating. The ability to convert carbon dioxide into fuel energy is a breakthrough process and once well established in would change our dependency on nonrenewable and limited sources.

Effect of Technology on Our Lives

With time, the use of internet is rising rapidly. The World Wide Web literally connects over 700 million people round the globe. The state-of-the-art technology has improved our means of communication as well as our educational standards. Due to the innovations in technology, an individual can gain knowledge about any topic at any place and at any point of time in his/her life. It has allowed the ease of availability of education. It has also improvised upon ways to fulfill our needs and to meet our expectations. Innovations in today's tech-world can help us to solve urgent problems.

The revolution in technology has given rise to chat rooms, discussion rooms, personalized web pages and online databases. The IT sector has completely changed the outlook of human communication with e-mails, video conferencing and instant messaging. With the advent of technology, people are building bridges to decrease the distances in their mind. One basic drawback that has taken place is that people are becoming lethargic due to high trends in technology. It is shortening our ability to pay attention. Robotics, automation and computerization are on the go for changing our lives. Implementation of robotics will give higher efficiency and cheaper labor, thereby increasing unemployment rate.

Now the other side of technology is not so green. It is because of improvised technology only that we have seen nuclear and atomic wars. This has also leaded to increase in pollution as well as corruption. Hence, one must know how to balance between manpower and automation. In the world of automation, cars have created freedom as well as concrete jungle. Technology is affecting our near future so it becomes our responsibility to streamline it in the right direction.

Confidence Interval Calculations with Microsoft Excel

Confidence intervals often give you useful insights into data sets you're trying to better understand. A confidence interval is the interval around a sample mean into which you expect the population mean to fall a certain percentage of the time.

If you have a sample of size n and know the sample mean m and population standard deviation sigma (s), you can find the range into which the actual population mean will fall x% of the time. Common confidence levels are 90%, 95%, and 99%.

Technology News

Using the Confidence Function

Confidence Interval Calculations with Microsoft Excel

The CONFIDENCE function uses the following syntax:

=CONFIDENCE (alpha,s,n)

Alpha is the significance level. It equals 1 minus the confidence level (expressed as a decimal). The s argument is the standard deviation of the data set. The n argument gives the number of items in the sample.

An Example Confidence Interval Calculation

For example, if a sample of 500 college graduates shows that they owe an average of ,000
in student loans at graduation and the population standard deviation is ,000, you can find
a 95% confidence interval estimate of the population mean amount owed.

To do this using the CONFIDENCE function, enter alpha .05 as the first argument, the standard deviation 2000 as the second argument, and n 500 as the third argument. The function looks like this:

=CONFIDENCE (0.05,2000,500)

The function returns the value 175.30. So you can say with 95% confidence that the population
mean is ,000 plus or minus 5.30. (Note that if you have Microsoft Excel installed on your computer, you can copy the text shown above and paste the text into an Excel cell to make the calculation on your computer.)

One final note should be made here: If the value of the population standard deviation is unknown, you can use the value of the sample standard deviation as the point estimate of the population standard deviation.

Facts about the Holocaust

The Holocaust began with Hitler's rise to power in January of 1933 and ended on VE Day (May 8, 1945). During this time, more than 6 million Jews and millions of other groups that caught the negative attention of Nazi Germany. While all the murders were devastating to native populations, none were so devastating than that of the Jews. During this period, 5,000 Jewish communities were wiped out and the total that died represented 1/3 of all Jewish people alive at that time.

Due to a series of events, Hitler assumed dictatorial powers in March 23, 1933 when the Enabling Act was passed. With total power available to him, he quickly developed a sophisticated police and military force and used them to squelch anyone who criticized his authority. From this authority stemmed the first concentation camp, Dachau, just outside of Munich which started as a political prison camp but evolved over time into a full scale Nazi concentration camp to exterminate Jews and others.

Technology News

By the end of 1934, Hiter's campaign against the Jews was in full force. The Nazis weere claiming them to be mongrels who were corrupting the pure German race and persecutions of the Jewish grew in strength. Those who could, fled Germany to other European countries which gave them safety for a while.
Facts about the Holocaust
The next major event that led towards the widescale destruction of the Jews was the Meeting in July of 1938 where representatives of 32 countries met in the French town of Evian to discuss the refugee problems created by the Nazis - but since no conclusive action was taken, Hitler took that as defacto notice that no one would act against him while he worked to purge the Jews from his territories.
Germany started World War II with the invasion of Poland in September of 1939 and in 1940 established Jewish ghettos in Poland where they could be isolated from the rest of society and kept an eye on. Conditions in the ghettos were deplorable - not enough food, water, space, sanitation facilities, etc., and many died from the horrid conditions.
In June 1941, Germany attacked the Soviet Union and began the implementation of the Final Solution - the beginnings of the systemized destruction of the undesirables. At first they were just gathered up, shot and thrown into mass open graves. It is estimated that over 1 million people died in this manner. But it wasn't efficient enough so more and more death camps sprang up.
From this point, the Germans worked on more and more efficient ways to liquidate the undesirables by bringing them to death camps to systematically kill them and recycle any valuables for the war effort. And in this instance, a valuable was a healthy person - so the Germans would work the prisoners until they had no more energy to produce and then kill them. In effect, that had millions of slaves being forced to work to death to help the Germans in their war efforts.
This atrocity continued to the end of the war - with liberation not happening until July 1944 and later. In July 1944, the Soviet Union liberatated Maidanek concentration camp and then in January 1945 - Auschwitz concentration camp and so on until Nazi Germany was totally defeated and all peoples were freed.
All told, there were only about 200,000 Jewish survivors by the end of the liberation and the death counts from the holocaust were estimated to be around 6 million Jews and millions of other people who did not fit the Aryan mold.

Security Audit

If you are having a security audit in your organization then you might just want to read this to ensure you get what you have paid for.

One of the main reasons that companies opt for security audit is to ensure that there is no problems within the company. Industries like banking, casinos and e-commerce are especially attractive to mischief, and they want to ensure that their networks are completely secure. Hence, they opt for security audits.

Refurbished

If you are getting a security done then ensure that the auditor gives you a useful report with relevant issues that need to be tackled. A report should be focused giving you real problems rather than concentrating on trivial issues.

Security Audit

Ensure that the team doing your security audit is well qualified and understands all the nuances of your networks and associated vulnerabilities. That is why you need to make sure that the team is a dedicated team of security engineers who know what they are doing. If necessary ask them for references and call up the references to find out whether the security audit company did a good job with their other clients.

It is important that your security audit company gets on well with the regulators. This will help you get a quick okay from the regulators as they already are pretty satisfied with the security audit's previous work.

Make sure that you do not use the same company that set up your system to conduct the security audit. If you do so, you will not get a unbiased and honest report from them. Always go for a security audit company who takes your business seriously, understands it completely, and will help you prioritize security risks and vulnerabilities.

Student Loan Law - 2010 Overhaul Raises Political Controversy

Student loan law (more accurately the 2010 overhaul) has dramatically altered and restructured the student lending market, since Democrats try to remove private loans that have been federally guaranteed. In 1965 federal subsides have been involved in student loans that private lenders started to build up. When Federal Credit Reform Act of 1990 was accredited the student loan law had a new sort of loan introduced, this being an significant moment in candidates' loan. Then applicants benefit from government loans without any intermediary lender. Following many tries Democrats ultimately succeeded in 2010 to remove the federally assured private loans.

Families and applicants who are dealing with monetary issues earn huge benefits from the overhaul of 2010. By the use of these procedures they mean to offer social protection and benefits the most important one the low interest rate. The assistance for fresh aspirant applicants is considered to be a great profit for private creditors. Democrats have confirmed that the refurbishment of student loan law will prioritize the access to college education. Then again, Republicans disagree with this initiative and invoke a considerable profession reduction within private lending market.

Graduates are the following segment whose monetary difficulties will ultimately be eased. The social protection continues with funds infusion for Pell grants. Consequently, a necessary element of the financial savings new loan law will generate, is going to be reoriented towards Pell grants. In addition, forgiveness is achievable after 20 years instead of 25 years.

Student Loan Law - 2010 Overhaul Raises Political Controversy

The student loan law overhaul has come as an impediment for private creditors since they will merely profit from servicing existing loans only, since 1st of July 2010. These being said, it's obviously that workers and employers professing in private lending market unquestionably have to look for economic alternatives previous to or subsequent to the 1st of July 2010.

This means private loans will have same privileges as all other private loans. Hence the interest for these loans will surely be larger than the one for federal loans. For that reason, candidates will apply for a private loans if they have no other affordable alternative. As a result of the democratic overhaul of the student loan law, the famous loan provider Sallie May has been forced to announce a big job reduction.

Future American students and graduates must pay back their student loans and that's when loaners will start acquire their benefits. Private loaners have created specific techniques intended to increase their earnings and students appear to become dissatisfied. Each measure could be easily translated as an injury for private loan providers.

As a consequence we can confirm that the student loan law has both positive and pessimistic impact and that the effect differs relating to every sides' point of view. The only method to reach long-term objectives is by taking sacrifices no matter the undesirable consequences that can develop in several segments.

The Four Broncos - The Story of the Tragic Bus Crash That Killed Four Hockey Players

It sent a deafening silence throughout the hockey world and beyond.

On December 30, 1986 at 3:45 PM, the unthinkable happened. Two days after the Christmas break, the Western Hockey League Swift Current Broncos were embarking on a two and a half-hour drive to Regina, Saskatchewan when their team-owned bus, a 1968 Western Flyer, skidded off the highway overpass, hit a sign then slid down an embankment nose first. It flew approximately 50 feet in the air, landing on its side when it skidded to a halt.

Refurbished

Four players were dead: Scott Kruger, Trent Kresse, Brent Ruff, and Chris Mantyka.

The Four Broncos - The Story of the Tragic Bus Crash That Killed Four Hockey Players

The scene was chaotic. The ditch was strewn with sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, and personal items. Two ambulances drove back and forth to the Swift Current Union Hospital, and passing motorists were flagged down by police to help transport the less seriously injured for medical attention.

The day before, temperatures were unseasonably warm - almost t-shirt weather, but there was a weather advisory in effect at the time of the crash - cold and blizzard conditions. The club's regular trainer, Gord Hahn, was in Winnipeg with Team Western, a pre-Olympic scouting program with player Dan Lambert. Ryan McGill also missed the trip due to a bout with tonsillitis.

The plan was to have the bus loaded and ready to go by 3:00 PM in order to arrive at the rink in Regina by 6:45. However, Scotty Kruger forgot his dress clothes and was ordered to go home and get them. (The players often traveled in comfortable clothes then changed on the bus when they reached their destination.)

The bus itself was likely in need of repair. It still had the old green and blue from when it served the Lethbridge, Alberta team. There was no bathroom on board, some of the windows were taped together, and the seats had tears and many stains.

Dave Archibald (who was cleared of any negligence) had just pulled the bus onto turn for the overpass onto the highway, when it hit a patch of black ice. In the aftermath, inside the bus was a scene out of a horror movie.

One of the players, wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and no shoes, was knocked out and woke up on top of another. The bus was on its side. In searching for his shoes, he went back to where he was sitting, lifted up a seat that had been torn off, and saw the legs of a teammate, whose torso had been buried underneath the bus. He then discovered another player, whose upper body was pinned inside with his legs under the bus - his arms reaching out for help as he died in front of him.

Kruger and Kresse played on the same line, had adjacent lockers, were friends and always together. They were found two feet apart from each other. At the time, the two were both were tied for second in team scoring, behind Joe Sakic.

Sakic got out of the bus by climbing through the shattered windshield.

"I was sitting at the front of the bus. Sheldon Kennedy and I were probably talking about the Christmas holidays we just had."

The four players were playing a card game at the back of the bus. The coroner said they died of trauma to the spinal cord.

The Regina game was cancelled, as were three more.

"It was halfway through the year, so it was tough getting back into the season," adds Sakic. "That was difficult - the first game back. The season after, we did real well. I think we finished second or third and got knocked out in the second round.

"It pulled the whole city even closer. Everybody, right from day one, was so good to all the players. It was our first year there. They tried to make us feel at home. Even after that, they pulled together even more."

The Memorial Service

Close to 4,000 attended the service held at the Swift Current Centennial Civic Centre on January 4, 1987. Every division and WHL team was represented by players and officials. Each player was buried in his home town.

Sadly, the Krugers' uncle, Herman Kruger (67), suffered a fatal heart attack on the way to the funeral.

The Aftermath

In the next two seasons, the Broncos set several team and league records and won the Memorial Cup in 1988-89.

According to one of the parents, there was no insurance and no psychological help.

A lot of players had a difficult time. Some became reckless and ran wild through the town, quit hockey, were depressed, or suppressed their emotions. All remain haunted by the experience.

Joe Sakic kept it to himself. He will rarely talk about it. "The best thing was during practices and games - that was the best time to get away. You just focused on hockey.

"It was the first time a tragedy happened in my life. Kind of reality checks in. You're a little more careful about the things you decide to do. You weigh the options, I guess."

This incident was the first fatal crash in WHL history but not the first close call. Freezing rain caused the Kamloops Chiefs' bus to crash in the mid-1970s and the Victoria Cougars' bus to roll near Butte, Montana in 1980. Another bus carrying a group of Canadian Pacific rail workers crashed and claimed 22 lives near Swift Current just six years before the Bronco crash.

Fortunately, today, teams exercise more caution. Calgary Hitmen public relations director and play-by-play man Brad Curle has actually talked to a few drivers about it. "The weight of the bus has almost increased to the point where it's virtually impossible for it to skid off the highway. I guess in the way it's crafted and structured, it just hugs the highway."

Teams, for the most part, charter. Of the few teams that own busses, they're newer models - 2000 plus and refurbished.

Since the Bronco incident, the Western Hockey League has placed a strong emphasis on safety. "If the road is not good, games are cancelled," adds Curle. "No longer do you absolutely have to trudge through the snow. Teams are more willing to cancel games."
